NOTES FROM TRENTHAM

(IT "SIR LANCELOT.")

A heavy fog hung over the Trentham course this morning, and seripusly interfered with training operations. The saud track and the new inside dirt track were used by horses that worked. General Petain did a couple of circuits on the sand. P. T.. Hogan gave Hylans, Liqueur,1 Good Start, and Kilkee half-pace. Callaghan ran along half a mile with Auckland, and finished in front. The last-named is not engaged on the opening day. E. Hatch will ride Callaghan if he can do the weight. Dainty Step was ridden by S. Walls, who will have the mount in the Charity Cup. Taranaki trainer E. George was out with Stork, Hipo, and Loved One. The latter, by Marble Arch, pulls very hard and wears a muzzle to prevent him going too fast. Alteration waa due to arrive from New Plymouth to-day. The Auckland contingent is much stronger than in previous years. A. Julian worked No Bother and Totara Jack. H. Eva arrived last night with Poanui and Mangamahoe. Gold Kip, who is well known at Trentham, hit out well in a. round of the sand. A. Cox also brought down Some Fashion, but he got into a fence yesterday, and may not be able to run on Saturday. P. Brady had Waikaretu on the lead, riding Forest Gold himself. Other Aucklanders to put in an appearance were F. Loomb with Rippling and Potoa Queen, C. Coleman with Oakleigh and Hyginas, W. Sharp with, Bitholia and Jolly princess. The success of EUerslie-trained horses at the Auckland Winter Meeting may be responsible for such a big Northern contingent, as the Ellerslie trainers do not travel much from home. P. Coffey worked Mort Avis, who looks in good fettle. .'..■■; 3: Morris's team, Ngata, Omaha, Bpnibrook, and Tatton Park, only arrived this morning, after travelling all night, and they were not asked to do much. . ■■ - - ' . . . . Another fresh arrival was Ngakanui, in charge of E. Murtagh. : Falstaff, Dick, Balefire, and Some Kid are expected from South to-day, in charge of Bert Jillett.. Sea De'il was worked under the supervision of his owner, Mr. Meredith. Walton jumped one _ hurdle , three times, and got over all right,

Owing to a family bereavement, Mr. C. F. Vallance's team, Chimera and others, have been withdrawn from all engagements at the meeting.
