BOXING

HUTT VALLEY TOURNAMENT. A boxing tournament under the auspices of the Hutt Valley Boxing Association was held in the Empire Theatre last evening, in the presence of a packed house. Tho committee deserves credit for the manner in which the tournament was conducted', and some very good exhibitions were given. Mr. Earl. Stewart acted as referee, and gave every satisfaction. Visitors from Wellington and representatives of the Wellington Boxing Association were present, ■ and congratulated the local committee on the excellent arrangements. The following are the results:— Paperweight. D. Hurdle (5.4) v. D. Brown (5.11).— A very interesting bout, Hurdle doing most of the leading and gaining the decision. J. Cottrell (5.13J,-) v. M. Hurdle (6.0).— This was a very good exhibition. Hurdle failed to do the leading, although his footwork was superior. Decision to Cottrell. Bantamweight. P. Saunders (7.12) v. 0. Arthur (8.2).— Arthur forced the fighting from the start, and got in some good right swings. Decision to Arthur. F. Vine v. B. Crerear.—This was a willing go, and Vine got home with some stinging lefts. Easily Vine's bout.* Featherweight. G. Green (8.13|) v. J. Hobba (8.13£).— An exciting contest and close display. Hobbs gained the decision. K. Goddard (8.12) v. R. Upton (8.3).— This was a rather poor exhibition, both boys standing off. Goddard got tha decision. Lightweight. H. Hobson (9.10) v. M. Power (9.10£).— Hobson proved too superior for Power, who was gams and took a lot of punishment. Hobson made free use of heavy left hooks. J. Burns (9.6) v. D. Love (9.3).— After three willing rounds, Burns was declared the winner, with little to spai-e. Love was aggressivo, but failed to connect. A. Brown (9.11) defeated W. Robson (10.0) after a very ordinary display. Petrio (9.10) v. G. Corner (9.3).— Corner made the pace in the first round, and piled up points. However, Petrie in the second and third rounds made use of some straight lefts, that cot Corner groggy. Petrie gained the decision. Slater (9.11) v. J. Robinson (10.0).— This was the fiehtof the evening. Slater is a whirlwind, and had Robinson in difficulties from the start. Easily Slater's bout. „ ; - Welterweight. J. Moran (10.4) v. F. Commetti (9.l3).—Moran never left, the issue in doubt, and . practically knocked Coml-' inetti out in the third round. j Middleweight. ■ •• ' ■ F. Davis (10.11) v. W. Leslie (11.3).— Leslie did "most'of the leading, but' fought too openly. Davis got home repeatedly with a, straight left.
