PRICE DOUBLED
OCEANIC MAIL CONTRACT. (UHIIED Mt«S3 ASSOCIATION.—COPIhIGBT.) (AUSTRALIAN - <IBW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) WASHINGTON, 3rd July. No renewal has yet been made of the Oceanic Steamship Company's mailcarrying contract, which lapsed on Saturday. It is understood the ■ company declared that it would suspend sailings immediately unless the Government paid double the amount now stipulated. The company asks for Approximately 360,000 dollars a year. The Post Office Department declines to meet the increase, since it feels it will prob- , ably succeed in gettinpr a foreign line to carry the mail for 100,000 dollars per annum, but it has asked the company to continue handling the mails for a period of several months longer at the existing rates, so as to allow an opportunity to place the question before Congress, with a request for an appropriation.
