HUTT-ROAD
BOARD'S IMPORTANT DECISION1
PERMANENT SURFACE TO BE
PROVIDED.
An important decision was reached, bjj , the Hutt-road Board of Control to-day^ when tho following motion, moved' bj; Mr. W. T. Strand, Mayor of Low**, Hutt, and seconded by Mr. J. W. M* Ewau, Mayor of Petone, was carried:—» That the Hutt-road Board of Con* trol proceed' at once with the construe* tion of the' best permanent road that it is possible to construct within itj powers. _ / The meeting- of the board was held in private, the Mayor of the city (Mr. R^ A. Wright, M.P.) presiding. 1 The board's decision is in accordances with the powers conferred by the Hntt. road Amendment Act, 1917. That Act authorises the Wellington City Council —the controlling authority—to constr>.t part of the Hutt;road for part of ,its width in concrete to such depth as ii thinks fit. For such a .purpose the council is empowered. to raise a loan of , £30,000 by special order, in appeal t<j the ratepayers being unuecessary. Tha interest and sinking fund on such a loan! would be deemed as part of the ex* penditure upon maintenance, and wouldi be proportionately borne by - the varU ous contributing authorities. It is of importance tc note that. th# A_t says that, the road shall, be puS down in concrete, and that a limit of' £80,000 is placed upon the expenditure for such a purpose. The hoard is there- ■ fore required to proceed within the statutory limits laid down, and further uw . vestigation will show whether it i« advisable .r possible to do so. It might} be thought necessary to secure a further amendment of the Act. More complet* information will be placed before th< board when it meets again on 19th July*
