The executive of tho Timaru branch of the Fanners' Union held a special meeting to-day to consider the attitude of the union towards the: situation at the freezing works. . . The chairman (Mr.' J. Trotfcer) having pointed out the importance of the matter to producers,, and haying expressed a hope that the companies would get all the labour they required, a suggestion to sit in committee was negatived. Mir. ■Trotter said the chairman of one company told him that nothing had been, done yet in South Canterbury, as they were hoping that the men would resume work. They were, however^ going to start with free labour next Monday. " j Mr. G. Steven arg ne <l that the union should be strictly neutral, and: Warned | both the men^ and the companies, the former for knocking off as they did, and i the latter lov giving occasion for trouble when there was only two or three weeks mare work to do. . The chairman combated this view. Their interests, he said, wene too seriously involved to allow them to be neutral. Others agreed with Mr. Steven, but it was agreed that the freezing companies cannot go back now. j The meeting went into committee to j consider a confidential communication regarding what the companies propose to do oh resuming. A resolution was adopted: "That this executive heartily supports the freezing companies in their endeavour. to have fanners' stock killed." V j
