GLIMPSES OF OTHER DAYS.
It is an astonishing thing, but nevertheless a fact, that Oriental always seem to play about their best game of the season against Petone at'Petorae. -Ifc was so last year, and "Drop-kick" has similar recollections of games before the war. He can recall an excellent game in the 1807 season, when Fred Boberts was in the very zenith of his form and reputation, and Oriental were about the prettiest -team in the whole competition to watch in action. Petone were then a combination of very willing players, and after the match their opponents had usually some bodily evidence to. exhibit | of the hardness of _tbe battle, and the great Fred just behind the scrum more than his quota of ; the price one has- to pay for being a star on the football field. And so on amid varying fortunes and the istrange vicissitudes of club football until the '■•. present day, Oriental have almost invariably.played their best game against Petone at Petone. Last Saturday was no exception to the rule. Oriental gave more than a glimpse of their former jfreatness, and were even in the- lead at half-time. Somebody called out: . "Come on, Petone, you've got to take them seriously." Fancy anybody having such an idea even ten years ago,, let ,alone expressing it. Petone would have; taken any game with Oriental seriously without any advice from the bank. But times.have changed, and Orients.l are notthe "Ories" of older days, no more than, Athletic are what they once were. Stilly the '''Magpies" did very well to lead at half-tinie. For once their backs got to work in the good old style, .and a try resulted, quite as good as anything Petone did with their line of express backs during the; rest of the game. ' Carroll shared ' the honours with Adam* in the'final onslaught. ;-."•' '-•...■;..'-<-^.-:■■■'.-■'. ■
