GREY COLLECTION
EXCHANGE WITH SOUTH AFRICA,
An Act was passed last year to authorise an exchange of Grey manuscripts between South Africa and New Zealand. The bulk of the, New Zealand material .reposes in the Auckland Public Library. The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. D. Stewart) stated to-day that 'step? have been proceeding under the authority of the Act to effect an. exchange. A considerable list of material held in the Auckland library has' been prepared. It is obvious from this that New Zealand has a largo quantity of manuscript and other matter ■which *it ■can very well hand over to South Africa; ■such material, for instance, as documents relating to South African natives, their habits, and language, and other records connected with the early history of South Africa., and also a quantity of matter connected with political happenings in that country—documents which are of no direct interest to New Zealand and which have no bearing upon Sir •George Grey's connection-with the Dominion. Oh the other hand, it is understood that South Africa has much ma'tsrial of a like nature bearing! upon New Zealand which this Dominion will reiceive in exchange. The Minister states (that it is obvious South Africa is as in■terested as we are in the exchange of 'documents.
