MUCH DISTRESS

AMONG THE POOR OF THE CITY

A SUGGESTION TO THE GENEROUS. According to a statement made to the Mayor (Mr. E. A. Wright) at last night's meeting of the City Council, there is much distress among the poor of Wellington. Mr. Wright said that men in public positions and others were brought closely into touch with really pathetic cases." There was really a great deal of genuine distress, and, although much was being done by some organisations, much remained to be done.

Mr. Wright referred to the generous gift to the poor of the oity of half a. ton of cocoa, made by Messrs. C'adbuxy and Fry. The cocoa had been1 stored at tho Town Hall, and he had now oompletsd aiTanagemente for its distribution. Mts. Waters, secretary of the Society for the Protection of Women! and Children, had' gathered around her a small band of workers, who would see that the cocoa r«ach«d th© most deserving cases, E^presentatives of the Salvation Army and other kindred organisations were on tie committee, and! it was believed) that good work -wouldi be done.

"There may be other firms in the city who are prepared to follow the trail which lias been blazed by Messrs- Oadbury and Fry," stated Mr. Wright. "If so, I can assure them that any gift of foodstuffs will be most acceptable just how. We will see to their proper distribution." ■ ■

A motion, thanking- MessTs. Cadbury and Fry for their generous offer, was carried amidst applause—and applause is unusual at the council table.
