ACCESS TO SUBURBS

TO TH» BDITOK. Sir,—l think it is high time this question of a road to Karori and Northland was dealt with in a broad manner. Wellington is going to bo a much larger city in 20 years; anoLher 20 on to that ana it will probably be double its present size; Has not the present council vision enough to see this? Petty tinkering with main road 3, otc, should not be thought of. We must build for the future. A thoroughfare running from j east to west of the city must be provided, and should be a highway that the city in the years to como will only need to add, to; its route and commencement should be laid down and started now. Wellington has suffarod too munh in the past from scanty vision. Let us broaden out and build so that the present and the future will hold no regrets. . The narrow-mindednoss of small communities should not be allowed to determine big questions. If properly built aud graded, the Raroii-road route is the best. This is no new scheme:- it was discussed some 60 years ago, uot perhaps a« auggestod now, but similar in its broad features. A wide, well-graded road from Willisstreet, through and across the hills' to the splendid open fields of Karori would undoubtedly meet all city _ and suburban requirements in that direction. We must expand southward and westward. .Lot us begin and do now what Uie. future yeans will compel us to do, and .«t * tUUCIt gfUtttSt' E«l.»*4 UlUi ttUi.., k PROGRESS..
