BREACH OF AWARD
Three cases arising out of a breach of the hotel workers' award were heard at the Petone Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M.
A. C. Wright, the licensee of the Central Hotel, Petone, was charged by Mr. J. Jackson, Inspector of Awards, with a breach of the award, in that he paid Miss M. Mundy £2 12s 6dper week—the award rate for a "one-hand" kitchen—instead of £3 ss, the rate for a "two-hand" kitchen. The facts were that the hotel porter spent about five; minutes each day in peeling potatoes, and, unfortunately for the licensee, this, according to a decision of. Mr. Justice Frazer, constituted the kitchen a "twoband" one. The Magistrate stated that he had no option but to accept the ruling of Mr. Justice Frazer on tlio question, but it' was ridiculous that the more work the cook was saved the more money she got. A penalty of Is was inflicted. The cook, for accepting less than the award rate, was alsq fined Is.
Arising out of this case was a claim made by Miss Munday, who lmd left Wright's employ, for the sum of £6 It, bsing the difference between thp £2 12s 6d (uid £5 5s rate of pay. and also a claim for throe days for which, she alleged, she had not been paid. Judgment was given for £4 18s 6d, £2 3s costs, Mr. Ci. H. M. Moir appeared'for Miss Muncly, and Mi\ A. Few fpr Wright,
