REPORT ON WORKING

Some months ago, on the motion of Councillor C. H. Chapman, a committee was set up by the City Council to investigate and report upon the workings of the tramway undertaking. The report, which is a very lengthy one, has now been prepared, and will be discussed at a special meeting of the council next Monday night. At the same meeting the 'following, notice of motion by Councillor L. M"Kenzie will be discussed:—"That, in order to encourage the residents oi the city to live in the outlying districts, a report be prepared by the tramway management showing how the following scheme could be brought into effect, and the probable financial result thereof as affecting the tramway undertaking:—. (1) That the present tramway concession tickets be withdrawn, and that in lieu thereof a concession ticket of sixty-two rides be issued, covering a period of ono month, the price of such ticket to be based on the actual cost of carriage of a. passenger per section, plue a certain percentage for contingencies. The ticket to be available for use only- between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9.30 a.m; and 4.30 and 6.30 p.m. (2) That no concession be made on the central city section of the service, but, in order to encourage travelling on such section, same be divided into two, one section being from Cour-tenay-place to Bank of Now Zealand corner, and the other from the Bank of New Zealand corner ■to Lambton Station, the fare on such city sections to bo Id per section. Councillor M'Kenzie's motion sbould really have been discussed at last, night's meeting, but at the suggestion1 of the Mayor consideration was deferred until Monday. Tenders for the erection of the new power-houso at Evans Bay will also be dealt with at the meeting on Monday. The tenders closed yesterday, but were not considered last night because the. City Engineer desires to make sure that they are in order.
