JOURNALISTS' AWARD
NEW APPLICATION BY CHRISTCHURCH.
(IT TBLIGRAPH.—PRBSS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Bth June. The Conciliation Council met to-day to deal with the application of the Christchurch Journalists' Union for a new award. ■ The union asked that the limitation of reporters' hours of work to 48 hours a week should be extended to cover the two Christchnrch morning papers, which at present work under a 12-hours day. The wages sought for reporters were those provided in the old award, with the. addition, of the cost-of-living bonuses; and an increase of Ss per week for general reporters. Increases of wages for cadets were proposed, and it was asked that assistant sub-editors j should be paid not less than the rate for senior reporters. Wages and conditions proposed for proof-readers were those provided for linotype operators in the typographical award, with an additional 10s per week for chief readers and three weeks' holiday annually in.stead of one. The employers, in their counter-pro-posals, offered the old award with some minor modifications. It was stated that the parties had met already in conference, and had agreed upon certain points with the understanding that the rest, including wages, hoars of work, and holidays for all classes of workers, should be referred to the Court. The Commissioner agreed to make recommendations on these. lines.
