SCHEME FOR 1 NEW SOUTH WALES
GREAT INCREASE IN PATIENTS
PROPOSED RESTRICTION OF SERVICE.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPTRIOHT.) (Received June 5; G a.m.) SIDNEY, This Day. The Government is considering a wide scheme of hospital reform. In spite of the growth of the Govetnmeht subsidy from £50,000 in 1913-14, to £141,000 this' year, the demands far surpass the provision. The hospitals are overcrowded, and funds are badly short. The population has dbubied since 1890, arid the hospital patients have increas.ed from 1.54 to 4.44 per cent, of I the mean population, proving that a much greater proportion of the people are availing themselves of the hospitals, arid at much greater cost. The Govei-nnient considers that the privilege is being abused* arid that many, people are being treated frea in the hospitals, whose means would enable them to pay for medical attention. •It,is proposed, among other reforms, to. restrict the use of the hospitals; to those who are unable to pay for private treatment. A committee of experts is to inquire into the whole hospitals question.--, i i .. . ......
