IDLE ENGINEERS

AN IMPOftTANf VOTE

"THE EMPLOYERS HAVE WON."

\ (AUSTRALIAN • NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) ' : , LONDON, 3rd.June. :Forty-seven engineering unions gave 9^,313 votes in favour of .the masters' terms ami 46,881 against. It1 is hoped that the remarkable majority will persuade the Amalgamated Engineers to see. the desirableness of ending the strike. ' A national conference of the Amalgamated Engineers decided to submit the employers' proposals to the ballot. Forty-five unions will resume work on Tuesday, but the Boilermakers' Society and the National, tlriion of Fouudrymen stand by tlie Amalgamated Engineer's. The beilfemakei's balloted against accepting the employers' terhis by 22,433 vdtes to 4195. -Foundry workers are taking another ballot. Unless a two-thirds majority is recorded against it, work will be resllffied forthwith. (PU6USHBD IN THE TIMES.) LONDON, 2nd June.' Commenting on the engineers' conference %t York, the special correspondent of The Times says the belated step of calling the conference might not have been taken were it not for the fact that the engineering union is no longer able financially to continue the struggle, and members have refused to submit to a levy of five, shillings weekly te support the members locked out. A plain interpretation of these facts ■is that the employers have won. Members must return to work as soon as possible, and the leaders recognise this.
