ATHLETIC BEAT SELWYN
Athletic played Selwyn as a curtainraiser at Athletic Park to tho PonekePetone match. Rjain had already begun to fall heavily, and the game was ,chiefly a, solid forward . battle between two fairly even packs. ; The teams were:— ' Athletic—Brook (captain), Bullard, Gibson, ■Malmanche, Hosking, Wilson, Brunsell, M'Carlie, Swain, Osborne, Duncan, Parks, Gooda-U, Guy, Christie. Serwyif.—Harrington, Kent, M'Lay, M'Brearty, M'Quade, Wogan, East-gate, .Patching, Hearlc, Desmond, Reeve, Rose, Donald, O'Connor, Dalton. ' Selwyn had the. better of, the first spell, and Wogan, seizing an opportunity in a idislocated/ attempt at a, passing rush by Athletic in their own territory, raced round the full-back' and scored ' a fine try, which, however, he was unable to convert. Selwyn were leading by 3.-0 at half-time. In ■ the second spell Athletic began to make better headway with the wind. Gibson marked in the Selwyn twenty-five, and landed a fine goal,' equalising the: scores. Then towards the close of the game a rush of Athletic forwards culminated in an attack which crossed the line, and Swain- touched down. Gibson added- the major points. Athletic 8, Selwyn 3, \' Mr. G.
