GERMAN TRADERS

TRAVELLERS IN SYDNEY

A COOL RECEPTION

PBICES THAT SPEAK FOR

THEMSELVES.

(UNITE!) PRESS ASSOCIATION COPTRIHT.)

(AUSTRALIAN ■ NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.)

(Eeceived June 3, 9 a.m.)

SYDNEY, This Day.

Accordingl to the Daily Telegraph, representatives' of German manufacturers are busy seeking to place orders, but generally they are having a somewhat freezing reception.. Many business houses are disinclined to start handling German gooas again, though they admit that if the goods come on the market they may be forced to stock them. A German traveller, who was seeking the trade of one firm, said the prices spoke for themselves; others were 'bJiying his goods, and the firm would find itseU compelled' to do the same.

The opinion; is expressed in some quarters that^ German goods, if they do come, will not be so cheap as is anticipated. Others think that the German manufacturers would be prepared to work for a year or two without a profit for the purpose of getting back the market.

The president of the Chamber of Commerce has brought under the notice of the Tariff Board the fact that German goods have already reached Sydney. A consignment was landed at Melbourne some time ago, and evaded the Customs officers, and part of it was purchased by a Sydney firm. The Customs Department at Sydney heard of the transaction, and' the goods were Jjeld tip for a month before the firm was allowed to dispose of them.
