His .Excellency the Governor-General announced yesterday in Auckland that His Majesty the King had been graciously, pleased to Confer the following birthday honours in recognition of distinguished services rendered by New Zealanders :— Knight Cpmmaeder of the British Empire.—The Honourable Dr.; ' Pomane, representative of the Maori race in the Executive Council. .'...' ■ '" : Knight Bachelor.—The Horiourable- w., C.,' F. Carncrosa,' Speaker of; the Legislative Council. . Companion of, St. Michael and St.. George.—Mr., Joseph P. Firth, formerly headmaster of Wellington College. .' , " ; J 0 Imperial Service Order.-i-Mr. John O'Donovan, M.V.0., exCommissioner of Police. The Honourable Sir Maul Pomare was \bdrn at Pahou./Taranaki, on 13th January, 1876, and was educated at the Boys' High School, Chfistchurch, and Te Aute College, Hawkes Bay. He took his medical degree ■in Chicago, and was appointed Government Health • Officer to the: Maoris iri 1901. He entered the House of Represent* tives as member for the/ Western Maori District in 1912, and has been I a member. of the Executive Council ,i the Native "race since that " year. He has also been Minister-in-Cv harge of the Cook Islands. Sir <My.vi Pomare's mervftes on behalf of th.i Maori race are well known, and duiung the war he did much in connection with the recruiting of Maoris for ; the Expeditionary Force. The Order^of ,the C.M.G. was conferred upoii him in 1920. His elevation to knighthood is an honour to the Maori race as well as to himself. . . |, T.ho Honourable Sir Walter CarncToss v who. .a Speaker of the, Legislative Council, .represented...the Taieri-electorate in the. House of Representatives from Deceraforft, 1890, to November, 1902, when he retired. He: was appointed to the Legislaifcive, Council, on 18thj,March' 1903, and was elected Speaker of the Councilman. Firth, C.M.G., was headmaster of Wellington College for close on 30 years,, and retired in 1920. The high traditions associated with Wellington Collide, are largely due to the great work of .Mr. Firth, who has always been a man osf noble and inspiring ideals Educated1, .At ■ Nelson, College and 'Canterbury ColUigte, he took his B.A. degree in 1889,. and ..'afterwards' became assistant master .at, lVelson Gjllege, Wellington College, arid Christ's College, Christchurch. In J892 he became headmaster' ?* Wellington College, -and retired in 1920. During; the long period of his service at the ; college he raised the school to_ a position tecorid to. none in the Dominion, and 1 maintained it there whilst holding up to 'thousands of boys, who had been under his care, the highest ideals of hartf '-work, hard and clean' play, straight\foi'wardness and uprightness of character, and loyalty to the school and to the country. When he retired the Coille'^e Board of Governors recognised his ieffprts in providing the very fine playgrou hd and surroundings of the school. Mr. 1 firth has always taken a keen interest in 'athletics. During the ■war he did much ; t<> assist recruiting, and he gave' valuables1 :assistance to philanthropic, and patriot organisations. He has always been sj.w ardent worker for ■Imperialistic ideala,-and for some years past has been preakifcnt 'of the iWellington branch of the iWavy League, and > Dominion Vice-PreslidWnt of the National Defence League. :, Mr., John O'Donoiati, M.V.0., 1.5.0., retired from the poi vAion of ' Commissioner of Police at t\it\ end of last ■, year .after a period, of morn than forty (years' valuable service to th. el State. ■ During the visit of H.R.H. the!
