COLDER WEATHER LIKELY
The cyclonic disturbance which has been causing very stormy weather in the far North made itself unpleasant in the neighbourhood of Cook Strait, and even further south, during, last night. Squally conditions have 'ruled, and snow is- roported this morning on some of the higher levels. South-easterly gales were shown on the chart this morning at 9 o'clock northward of New Plymouth, and northward, of Kawhia and Gisborne.
The forecast to-day js.- for * southeasterly winds, strong to gale, northward of Hokitika and Lyttelton, and Mr. Bates says that they are likely to be strongest about Hawkes Bay and Poverty Bay. Rain is also predicted, and floods are likely in the same districts. Although it is cold to-day, it is likely to be still colder in the near future. The barometer has a.rising tendency "in the North, but is unsteady in the Southern districts, and there arc, likely to be heavy seas, especially northward of Kaikoura and in Cook Strait. ' :
