ST. MARTIN'S, DAY'S BAY

NEW CHURCHROOM OPENED.

. After six years' of strenuous work on the partof the Day's Bay Church Building Committee, the culmination of, its work, or, at least, a part of its underr taking, was reached last evening, when St. Martin's Churchroom was formally opened ■ for church and other purposes. Jt 'was'toplained that the service was not exactly dedicatory, as the building would be used for secular as well as church purposes. The building, which is lofty and commodious, as well as being of tasteful design, will seat over 100 people, and cost £800 to complete. A great variety ■of church furnishings have been presented by residents of Day's Bay, gifts which are appreciated by the committee, in that its funds were thus conserved for expenditure on the building itself. . ' '

The hall was crowded last evening for the opening ceremony, a number of visitors from the city as well as from the more distant East Harbour bays being present. The Rev. O. M. Stent, vicar of St. Alban's, conducted the ceremony, special prayers for the usefulness of the building being offered by the Yen. Archdeacon A.; M. Johnson. The Rev. R. H. Hobday assisted at the service, and the sermon was pleached by the Rev.. A. W. Payne, vicar' of Kelburn. The latter took as his text Isaiah xvii: 60, and reviewed the life history: of. St. Martin, the patron saint of the bnilding, who served amongst the rough legionaries of, Constantine, and eventually : became of Tours. He concluded by congratulating residents and the Building Committee, which had ] collected funds under the secretaryship of Mr. E. H. Anderson, on the achievement attained by the erection of the hall. .

The attractiveness of the service was considerably added to by the singing of a specially organised choir, Mrs. Herzog presiding at the organ. >
