THE COMPULSORY SYSTEM
ABOLITION URGED IN AUSTRALIA'
ALLEGED EVIL EFFECTS ON
INDUSTRY.
(BMTE» MUSS ABSOCIAHON.-COPYRMHT.) (Received May 27,. 10 a.m.)
SYDNEY, This Day,
Following.the lead given in Melbourne, a movement is being launched in Sydney by business men to secure the rescission of the compulsory clauses of the Federal and State Industrial Arbitration Acts. The promoters contend that before the compulsory Ac'fc came into existence, masters and men occasionally had a rousing fight, but on the whole the industrial machine worked smoothly and efficiently. Since compulsory arbitration has been in force, the masters and men' have been enemies all the time, and an impassable barrier has been erected that has made friendly intercourse and cooperation impossible. The industrial machine has -jorgotten. how to work smoothly and efficiently. The losses in wagss have exceeded all records, and the outjiut of industry has diminished by oveT 30 per cent, in the past five years. Unemployment has reached terrifying dimensions, and the economic edifice is threatened with, collapse. "The only way to overcome these evils and to make Australia prosperous and happy is to wipe out the pernicious system of compulsory arbitration."
