MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., presided over a brief sitting of the Magistrate's Court this morning. For insobriety, four first-offenders received the usual penalty. Jean Rawlings, a young woman, said by Sub-Inspector Landor to have been drinking heavily and knocking about town, %vas charged with being an idle and disorderly person having insufficient means of support. A remand was granted for one week. . Henry Pern was charged with deserting the White. Pine, a ship, .at Greymouth, and also that, being an alien, he entered New Zealand without a permit. A further charge of secreting himself on the Takapo and going to sea was preferred, against the accused seaman, who, on the application of Sub-Inspector Landor, was remanded until 4th April. Boy Mannaduke Dent was, on the application of Sub-Inspector Landor, remanded to appear on Bth April on a charge of failing to provide for the adequate maintenance of his wife and child at Whangarei. The defendant was arrested at Christchurch, and the remand was sought for the purpose of making further inquiries. Mr. J. S. Evans dealt with a number of juvenile cases. Three boys involved in the stealing of bottles of soft drinks from a shop were handed over to their parents, with instructions' for suitable corporal • punishment. Another boy admitted breaking into a whare and stealing 12s 6d, which he had spent about town. He had been put on a sea-going vessel, but under the law could not continue there as being too young, pis Worship, on the suggestion of the probation officer, ordered restitution of the money, and adjourned the case for a month; the culprit to report to the probation officer at regular intervals, and to be sent as soon as possible to a farm.
