PROGRESS LEAGUE FOR HUTT VALLEY
A meeting at Lower Hutt, after being addressed by Mr. G. Mitchell, M.P., on Hutt Valley developmental projects, appointed a strong provisional committee to call a public meeting for the purpose of creating a progress league. Plenty of constructive work awaits the new body, which can hardly fail to get some important things done, and may, if properly supported, begin a new era in the development of the Capital City's principal outlet. There is probably no equal area of land in !New Zealand the progressive prospect of which, during the next decade, equals that of the Hutt Valley. Not even deflation can keep it back, but a united spirit on the part of its inhabitants would certainly do much to help it forward. While we applaud Mr. M'Ewan's advocacy 1 of amalgamation, we hope that he will not despise a compromise, , should some of the people of Lower Hutt not be prepared yet for corporate unity. Possibly it may turn out to be advisable to move for a while along a line of less resistance— co-operation, functioning through a board or boards to control common services. Amalgamation is the best course, but the compromise measure would be preferable to no advance at all.
