TARIFF ON WOOL
UNITED STATES. SCHEDULE.

WASHINGTON, 16th March.
The Finance Committee of the Senate is considering the wool' schedule in the Fordney Tariff Bill. Various witnesses stated that an effoft was being made to have a duty of 15 cents a pound provided fpr low-grade wools, such as the South American type. Senator. Gooding stated that the sheep industry had' suffered greatly, and the number of sheep had decreased from 64,000,000 to 33,000,000 in the last twenty years. Other witnesses p6inted out that the Fordney Bill, as passed by the House of Representatives, provided that the rates should not exceeS^ 35 per cent, ad valorem, and asked thai only specific rates should be included Mn the permanent tariff,' all duties. > being based on' clean wool, which would work out at 33 cents a pound for scoured wool, 22 cents for washed, and 11 ceats for greasy. ■
