WAIMATE', 16th ■: March; ._ A fire-occurred at Redcliff. tl£s morning at 8.30 o'clock, when a seven-vooin-ed house, owned and occupied by-Mr. Robert Geddes, was tdta}ly destroyed. Airs. Geddes and her tw,p'children were the only ones in the house at the time. She was _ rendering down some fat in the oven". The fat caught fire, and, thoigh she tried to drag it outside, she had to desist. Tho flames quickly obtained a hold, but there wis no means of combating the fire, as Mr. ; Geddes and the farm hands' were all away. The house,, furniture, and outbuildings were totally destroyed. Details- as to 'insurances are not available.
DUNEDIN, 16th March. A fire ,in- confectionery premises in Maclaggan-street this evening resulted in the destruction of the rear portion of the building.;. The main portion ,downstairs; and the top story were slightly damaged by smoke. The building-and stock are insured with the Phoenix office, but the amount is unknown. The owners, Messrs/Stewart and Sons, estimate their loss at about £150 D.
