WHAT IS NEW ZEALAND DOING ?

TO THE IDITOI. Sir,—Your correspondent "Pahiatua,' 1 and others, have made good and timely suggestions. Tho citizen looks to those in authority to take up suoh matters. Coukl not a ship be' arranged for to load for a Russian port direct ? New Zealand i can surely send at least one.. Even the New Zealand; whioh we readily gave for war, could be turned to a purpose, of peace and humanity, instead of being immediately "scrapped." Suoh a, demon-' Btration would give great moral inspiration and encouragement to thoso striving to save what is best in civißsa-tion, and afford a concrete and double assurance of our good faith in Pacific and' other conferences. I understand wo . have also Christian associations and similar bodies. Can wo venturo to hope they will move our offioial heads, likewise ship agonts, stock agents, woollen companies, farmers' unions, and others? His Excellenoy has voluntarily offered to "out" his emolument by £500. Now. it would be another fine demonstration of bona fides if this "cut," together with that of Ministers' »nd M.P.'s, were diverted to the rescue from desperate straights, of an .unfortunate and perishing section of our late Allies! Or shall we see them suffer and weep alone. —I am, etc., ■ FREE LANCE. Bth Mar*. TO Til »RO*. Sir,-—I note with interest tne appeal of "Charity" for the establishment of a Russian Famine Relief Committee for the purpose of organising a fund to help the starving millions of Russia. Would it be news to "Charity" and your readers to know that a committee, for the abovementioned purpose, was formed some two months ago, but, so far, have failed to open a fund, or take any steps to do so. There are members of th* Labour Party and various other organisations on this committee; yet, in spite of their boasted de-' fenco of Soviet Russia, when it cornea to doing any practical work for the relief of tho starving masses, they indulge in a great deal of talk, form committees, end—do nothing. •. All I can say, is, that as they have done nothing, it behoves some other organisation to take, that important matter in hand. But, who will dare to tako it up?—l am, etc., F. WILLIAMS. Bth March.-
