RED CROSS WORK
NEW ZEALAND EXECUTIVE.
A meeting of the executive of the New Zealand branch of the British Ked Cross Society and the Order of St. John was held in the Red Cross Chambers yesterday afternoon, the Hon. Dr. W. E. Collins, C.M.G., presiding. Other members present were:—The Hon. George Fowlds (Auckland), and Messrs. J. A. Flesher (Canterbury), L. 0 H Tripp (N-Z;,Council), T. Munt (Wellington), and M. S. Galloway, M.C. (secretary) Mr. Hope Gibbons, of ' Wanganui, waited on the executive in connection with the funds being collected by the Rev. Captain Mullineux for the establishment of hostels in the war area. He suggested that a grant or a loan should be made by the Red Cross Society rather than have appeals made at meetings at which relatives of deceased soldiers were present. The chairman pointed ont that the Red Cross Society had no money available at present for the purpose. A loan could not be made without the sanction of the Minister. In any case Captain Mullineux( had now completed his New Zealand tour, and on arrival in England he would furnish a report regarding the amount of money collected. The Red Cross expenditure for the past quarter had amounted to £9956 2s lid, an increase of £2000 on the previous quarter.
The chairman reported that a committee of Wellington citizens, had requested the society to do something in connection with providing relief for people in Russia. Members agreed that the calamity was great enough to justify giving them assistance. It was decided tj ask the Mayor of each of the principal cities to convene meetings with a view to organising a Russian Relief Campaign.
