DEARER FOOTBALL

Everything is dearer nowadays, including Soccer football. Mr. W. Anld, president of the W.F.A., mentioned at the annual meeting of the associatipn last evening that Mr.,A. Williams, secretary, had waited upon the Reserves Committee of the City Council with a request that charges for grounds should not be increased, but, he feared, the committee had not been greatly* swayed. However, the matter would probably be taken up by the whole council and something might be., done.' The City Council, said Mr. Auld, was asking 25s a day for each of the reserves played on, 10s for the early and 15s for the late games, and the difference to the association would be about £137 15s for the season, while to the Rugby Union the difference would „be , over £200. „ The association, he said, catered for a very great number of boys of sixteen and thereabouts, and he very much doubted whether the parents of those boys wonld be able to give them more towards their play. After all a twopenny or threepenny tram fare with occasional railway trips mounted up from father's point of view. "I think it is a very great mistake for any controlling body to endeavour to make its playing grounds pay," said Mr. Auld. "The grounds should'be a charge upon the; rates, not upon the players." .
