REPORT ON CANCELLED AUSTRALIAN CONTRACT.

(BNITIJ MIES ASSOCIATION.—COPTMOHT.) SYDNEY, "Kb. March. A report called for by the Government in explanation of th e cancellation of a contract with Java for the supply of cast-iron pipes by the Government dockyard at Newcastle states that it will be possible to obtain tlie pipes from the Continent or Great Britain, and land them in Java, at a smaller price tnan the present or future conditions appertaining in Australia allow. The report concludes : "Pipes are being landed in New 'Zealand from England, at a much smaller price than it ia possible to manufacture them in Australia."
