HARVEST KING WINS AUSTRALIAN

CUP.

MELBOURNE, 7th MarcH. The weather was fine for the Fleminglon races, and the course was in great order. There was a large attendance. Trainer J. Scobie led in the first two winners, Isa and Rosina, both of which are owned by the breeder, Ernest E. Clarke. Bassi and Winji Winji were left at the post in the Elms Handicap, which Isa won narrowly in the last stride. Rosina led all the way in the Ascot Vale Stakes, and scored very easily. This is Trainer Scobie's eleventh success in this race. The time, lmin 14£sec, is a record for the race.

Berribee won the Steeplechase all the way. The top weight, Monrose, fell. There was great interest in the Australian Cup, with a field of twenty-three starters, which is a record for the race. Harvest King led from start to finish. The value of the stake is £2942 to the winner. Harvest King was vvell handled by the Sydney jockey, J. Toohey, who won the subsequent race on Wish Wynne. Harvest King is trained by J. M'Cann,. of Caulfield. The Rover got a bad run at the riverside. Results:—

Elms Handicap, of 1000 sovs ; one mile. —E. E. D. Clarke's ch f Isa, 8.4, 1; Sonora, 7.11, 2; Waranton, 8.0, 3. Thirteen started. Won by a short head. Time, lmin lO^sec.

Ascot Vale Stakes, of 1500 sovs; six furlongs (for two-year-olds).—E. E. D.

Clarke's ch f Rosina, 8.7, 1; Ursina, 8.7, 2; Pascoe, 8.10, 3. Ten started. Time, lmin 14isec.

March Steeplechase, of 500 sovs ,■ about two miles and half a furlong.—Berribee, 11.3, 1; Diniwin, 9.4, 2; Glenard, 11.7, 3. Nine started. Won by fourteen lengths. Time, 4min ofsec.

Australian Cup, of 5000 sovs; two mile's and a-quarter.— P. C. Nixon's br c Harvest King, by Comedy King—Harvest Home, 3yrs, 7.8 (J. Toohey), 1; Sister Olive, 7.12, 2; Purser, 8.1, 3. The course scratchings were Salitros, Wildun, Glugo. There were twenty-three starters. Harvest King quickly ,ran to the front from Earl of Seaficld, Stare, Sister Olive, and MDeora- Double Bezique lost his rider at the end of three furlongs. Harvest Kin» led by two lengths from Stare and Mnoora when passing the stand, and at the river he led by a length and a-half from Stare and Earl of Seafield. Harvest King, Sister Olive, and Queen Comedy was the order at the home turn. Going on, Harvest King won by three-quarters of a length, with Purser third, the same distance away from Sister Olive. King of the Forest was fourth, Rahda fifth. Jackstaff sixth, and The Rover fifteenth. Time, 3min 54sec.

Boiirke Handicap, of 750 sovs; seveii furlongs.—Wish Wynne, 9.1, 1; Lisnarane, 8.6, 2; St. Speed, 7.10, 3. There were seventeen starters. Won by one and a-half lengths. Time, lmin 26sec.

Hopeful Stakes, of 400 sovs; five furlongs.—Perspective, 7.7, 1; Chelae, 7.7, 2; Polycletan, 7.10, 3. There were nineteen starters. " Won by two lengths. Time, lmin 2isec.
