PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP.

The Wellington Bowling Centre's pairs championship commenced on the Thorndon Club's green this morning. Although the green was in perfect order and running true, tlie gusty nor'-west-erly \find interfered with play considerably. The game between Hataitai and Kelburn, which was won by the former, was closely contested, and was level pegging throughout. At the 20th head, Kelburn were one up, but in the final head Foilding, of Hataitai, drew two shots with his last two bowls, which Kelburn failed to reach. Hataitai won by 19 points to 18.

The game between Wellington and Victoria also provided a keen contest for 16 heads. ' In ths last , five heads Wellington forged ahead, winning finally by 3 points. Od several occasions during the final stages of the play Victoria had hard luck in missing their objective by the narrowest of margins.

Arrangements for the torirney are being capably conducted by Mr. C. V. Erogan, secretary of the Thorndon Bowling Club.

Results of play in the first round are as follow:—

Hutt (Macaskill and M'Gurk), 29; Seatoun (W. Wyatt and C. A. Wyatt), 25. Petone (Powell and Melhuish),- 18; Karori (Cooper and Gapes), 17. Eastbourne (M'K'enzie and Norris), 29; Johnsonville (Thomson and Sloane), 19. Newtown (Sexton and Hunt), 28; Island Bay /Jenkins and Richard), 12. Hataitai (Feilding and Kershaw), 19; Kelburn (Compton and Angus), 18. Wellington (Portions and Brinsden), 17; Victoria (Tucker and Bolton), 14.. Thorndon and Lyall Bay each had a bye.

The draw for the second round, which is being played this afternoon, is as fo|ows:—Newtown v. Lyall Bay; Hutt v. Wellington; Eastbourne v. Hataitai; Petono v- Thorndon.
