TEAMS FROM OVERSEAS

COUNCIL'S PROPOSAL.

Information regarding the tour of Maclaren's team of English amateur cricketers was recently sought by the Wellington Cricket Association, and a reply from the New Zealand Council indicates that an important change in the method of financing tours from overseas teams is proponed. A letter from the secretary of the council, read at last night's meeting of the Wellington Association's Management Committee, contained the. following information :— " The question of matches by overseas teams against local associations was touched upon, when the opinion was expressed that the whole takings and risk of the Maclaren teairvmight be taken by the council. Mr. .5. F. Wilson moved, and it was unanimously carried: 'That the Management Committee be recommended in the event of a visiting team coming to New Zealand that the tour should be run entirely by the council, it to take all risk and all the gate money less a small percentage to the local association.' The whole question, however, will be gone into carefully by the Management Committee prior to the arrival of the Maclaren team, which, I< understand, is expected to sail from England during September." In discussing £he proposal, members pointed out that, as Wellington would be playing most of their representative matches away from home next season, the loss of the good gate which could be expected at the English team's match would be severe.

The Chairman (Mr. C. G. Wilson) said that the council on this occasion appeared prepared to take a risk where there was no risk. In. the past, the practice had been for the aesociation ' to guarantee amounts for each match. The object of the council in wishing to take the risk in this case was that they might start a fund to send teams abroad. The question required careful consideration. This was deferred until the next meeting.
