A WORLD S RECORD

SWIMMING AT TE ARO ' BATHS

MISS PAULINE HOEFT IN GREAT, FORM

Miss Pauline Hoeft, of Auckland', was in great form when she competed at the swimming carnival held at Te Aro Baths on Saturday afternoon, and she established a new world's record for ladies for 440 yards. Miss Hoeft competed 'with great success at the National Championßhips held here recently,, but in the quarter-mile event she was beaten by Miss Shand, of Christchurch. Miss Shand created a sensation by swimming the distance in 6min 26 2-ssec—a world's record. On Saturday Miss Hoeft swam under championship conditions with the local champion, Claridge, and cut out the distance in 6min 25 l-Ssec-^-l l-ssec faster' than Miss Shand's record. Miss Hoeft received an ovation when her new world's record ■tfas announced, *nd she should go to Australia now with complete confidence. Claridge swam alongside Miss Hoeft the whole journey, and over the last fifty yards could not pass her, for she was swimming extremely well. The judge gave the verdict to Claridge, bnfc a dead-heat would probably have been more correct. There was a big crowd at the carnival, which had been organised by the Wellington Swimming and Maranui Swimming and, Life-saving Clubs. Some important events were decided, including the first distance in the schoolgirls' and schoolboys' provincial championships and the inter-school relay races for teams of four. All these events were disappointing, both as regards the number of competitors and the quality of the swimming —proving, if proof is necessary, that swimming is still sadly neglected in the schools. Th 6 Clyde-quay School won the Duthie Cup and, the Coltman Cup, and the double success seemed to be popular. In the 100 yds Invitation Scratch Race for ladies Miss Hoeft was an easy winner, and the other Auckland representative,, Miss Piri Page, intermediate champion, was setond. The local girls were completely outclassed. Three teams—i Maranui, Lyall Bay, and Wellington— contested the Flying Squadron Relay Race for the Walker and Hall Cup, and Maranui won comfortably. The interest in this event is nothing like what it was in pre-war days. The programme for the afternoon extended over two hours and a-half, and was thoroughly enjoyable from every point of view. The weather, conditions inside the baths were ideal for swimming; outside the baths there was a nor'-west gale. The carnival was efficiently managed.
