PRICE OF LAMB

STATEMENT CONTRADICTED,

Publicity was giVen last weeK to a statement that Canterbury lamb had been sold at 9lb per lb c.i.f., arid that this drop in prices was " the first result arising out of the settlement of the Armour difficulty through the initiation of the meat pool." The statement added that a similar fall was reported in mutton prices.

The Prime Minister cabled to the High Coihmissiorier concerning this statement, and he has received the -ollowing reply from Sir James Allen:—■

"In reply to your telegram of 16th February, have made full inquiries, bu£ am unable to obtain confirmation thai c.i.f. sales of^, Canterbury lambs have ■been made at^9d. Firms consulted do not credit accuracy of statement, arid state that they have during last week made c.i.f. Sales of lambs at prices' Varying from 10|d to' 10§d, and that sales ex ships North Island lambs have been made at 10£ d and 10|d. Mutton values slightly lower, but this mainly applies to ewes and heavy-vveight sheep: Prime and second-class quality light-weight sheep have been sold last week ex ship at 7d."
