CONFERENCE CONCLUDED.

The annual conference of the New Zea-' land Society of Civil Engineers was concluded yesterday. A paper on "Rainfall and Run-Off" was read by Mr. W. R. Holmes, late Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department, and Mr. F. W. Furkert, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department, read a paper prepared by Mr. C. J. M'Kenzie, of the Public Works Department, on the Arthur's Point bridge over the Shotpver River. Mr. Furkert also read a paper on the engineering works executed at Trentham and Featherston to improve the sanitation of the camps after the epidemic of 1918. A paper on the New Plymouth hydro-electric works was read by Mr. R. L. Fearless. Discussions took place on the papers; and also' on Mr. V. Black's earlier paper on "Electricity Demand." In the evening the engineers of local bodies met and selected subjects for discussion at the.next conference Mr. Mac Lean, the retiring president, was suitably complimented on his service to the society, and Mr. Ashley Hunter, of Auckland, was instilled as his successor.
