WAIRARAPA SETTLEMENTS

The Minister of Lands was asked by Mr. A. D. M'Leod (Wairarapa) this morning if he would have an investigation made. of the difficulties which had arisen with respect to the Marawa-a-mau and Pihautea soldiers' settlements from flooding and erosion, The lands of several settlers were affected, and it was beyond the finance of any one settler to cope with the trouble. The Hon. D. H. Guthrie replied that he was now obtaining a report as to the trouble on the first estate. It had been known that the Pihautea lands were subject to flood, and arrangements had been made for carrying away the flood waters. It would be a difficult matter to deal with the erosion owing to the character of the soil, but he would have the matter investigated.
