A WORD FOR MORTAGEES.

Several members have asked the Primo Minister whether.he is prepared to give protection to 'dairy farmers who are paying high rates of interest on mortgages. Mr G. Witty. (Riccarton) put the other side of the case yesterday. Would the Prime Minister, he asked, protect' the mortgagee ? Some.mortgagees, he said had been placed in a very awkward position through being unable to call in their principal to meet payments' due on contracts into which they had entered. The result had been that they had been forced to borrow money at a high rate of interest. The Prime Minister said the position was much more complicated than appeared at first.sight. There were undoubtedly mortgagees in rather serious difficulties /because they could not recover their money. He wanted to go into the matter as soon as the session came to a close. Members would realise that it had been impossible for him to give any time to it during the past few days.
