THE GAOL MURDERS
DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED,
LONDON, 7th February.
Official.—The death sentences in connection with the Londonderry Gaol murders have been commuted in one case to imprisonment for life, and in the other to fifteen years' imprisonment.
[An attempt to rescue Sinn Feini prisoners from Londonderry Gaol was made on 2nd December. The ie»cu« party drove up to the gaol in motorcars about 3 a.m., and the prisoners made simultaneous demands for water. They seized the" warders,'and bound and gagged them, rushed- into the prison yard, and knocked down and^tied several constables. A patrol interrupted the proceedings as a rope-ladder was being thrown over the wall by the rescuers to a number ol prisoners who were waiting to use it, and,, on entering the gaol, th» patrol found that Constables Gorman and Little had been killed. A warder named Leonard and fourteen of the prisoners were subsequently committed for trial on murder -charges.]; ' ■ •';: ; •
