WAGES INCREASES
UPWARD/MOVEMENT OF BASIC RATES
During the discussion in the House of Representatives of thel Indu3trial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment, mention has been made of the wages increases granted since 1914, and there has, been an implication that such increases have been confined to bonuses. According to information supplied vtp The Post by a correspondent who vouches for the accuracy of his research, there have be'en substantial increases in the actual basic rate in many trades. The par-, ticulars follow, and they are of special interest:— | Engine-drivers.—l9l3-141 rate, Is 3|d per hour, or 10s €d per day; present ■ basic rate, 17s per day.; bonus, 6d psr day; total wage, 17s 6d. Drivers (one horse). —1913-14 rate, £2 8s per week; present basic rate, £3 15s; bonus, 10s; total, £4 ss. .. . . Engineers.—l9l3-14 rate, Is 4Ad; present basic rate, 2s; bonus, 3|d; total, 2s 3Jd. Plumbers.—l9l3-14 rate, Is Sd; present basic rate, 2s 3d; bonus, id; total, 2s. Sid-Labourers.—l9l3-14 rate, Is 2d; present basic rate., Is 7d; bonus, 3*d; total, Is 10? d.
