SURPLUS BUTTER
AMOUNT A^JD CONDITION OF STOCKS AUSTRALIAN COMMITTEE'S WORK. <CKITM PRIM AIIOCUTIOK.—COPTMB-T.) (Received December 23, 11 a.m.) I MELBOURNE, This Day. | The Butter Trade Committee appointed to discuss the proposed disposal of the British Government's surplus Austra-' lasian stocks has received a cable message from London stating that the total ■Australasian stock is under 840 000 boxes. Of the Australian, ,10 per cent, ie of the second grade, and the remainder is first grade. Of,the New Zealand butter, 5 per cent, is second grade and the remainder first grade. The condition of all of last season's" purchase is satisfactory. The committee considers that the reduction of shipments from January to March is cfential if disaster is to be averted. It is felt that the British, Government will agree to delay the' forced sale till early in the year, but will continue to reduce the price to meet the, market. In the interim, it is. feared, the British Government will not consent to hand over the stocks to the committee without a definite price being fixed and a colonial Government guarantee assured. '
