POTATO SELLING

THE GROWER AND CONSUMER. Marketing is undoubtedly one of* the most important sides of commercial potato-growing, remarks Mr. H. A. M'Gowan 'n the Journal of the Department of Agriculture. The very wide difference between the price often received by the grower and the retail price to the consumer is well known. The* growers in the principal producing districts have recently banded themselves together under the South Island Potatogrowers' Association, the object* of this organisation being "to bring growers and consumers closer together and con--trol distribution.". To a certain extent these objects axe already being attained, for the' distribution during the past season has shown a great improvement. Closer co-operation between producers and consumers i_ required, however. "Unless a grower is in a position to take risks," adds Mr. M'Gowan, "he may be strongly advised to sell off the fork or machine, as notatoes are liable to deteriorate quickly. In the case of large growers it is a good plan to sell half the crop as soon a_ dug and store the remainder. Since the imposing of the Australian embargo commercial potato-growing in New Zealand nas become considerably more speculative, tha local market being so easily over-sup-plied."
