RENT RESTRICTION
RECONSIDERATION AFTER
CHRISTMAS.
Several lawa due to expire on 31sfc December are continued by the Statutes Repeal and Expiring Laws Continuance Ml put through all p,. stages by both Houses of Parliament last night. Tha extension is until 28th February, 1922, to enable the laws to be thoroughly reconsidered when the House resumes after the Christmas adjournment.
All the rent restriction laws and the law giving the Arbitration Court power to amend awards with respect to hours and wages are continued. The protection given local authorities by the Finance '.Act, 1918, as amended by the Statutes Repeal and Expiring Laws Continuance Bill, 1921, in respect of loans falling due is amended by the addition of the following proviso: "Provided that where the rate of interest payable on any such loan is less than 6 per cent, per annum the rate of interest payable after 51st December, 1921, shall be 6 per cent, per annum." The Prime Minister explained that the information before the Government was that trustees had invested in these loans at a low rate, and were debarred by the existing legislation from getting the current rate.
