RUSSIAN FAMINE RELIEF FUNDS
Mrs. J. W. Stables, of Hawker-street, Wellington, who last year was closely identified with the movement for raising money for the Save the Children Fund, has received a grateful acknowledgment from Miss . Eglantyne Jebb, hon. secretary of the fund, of the assistance given. Miss.. Jebb uncloses leaflets which the re.cipient is distributing; they give 6ome idea of the need for further help to the fund in connection with l the work in Russia. The news from Russia, it is emphasised, continues to be exceedingly grave, and unless something is done speedily, disaster, Miss Jebb predicts, will overtake the whole of Europe. The Save the Children Fund promoters' have undertaken to feed 250,000 children in Saratov, under the direction of Dr. Nansen, the world-famed Artie explorer, who- has been appointed High Commissioner by the Geneva Conference, to coordinate relief work in Russia. Dr. Nansen's appeal says, "Never in the world's ■ history has help been more desperately needed; every minute is precious." The fund people have already started feeding in the famine area 100,000 children relying on the generous support of the Dominions as well as the Home country. "The leaflets describe, in a manner that must appeal to British hearts, the appalling conditions in Russia, where the actual death roll is estimated at, 100,000 per day. In the work of mercy, this effort to prevent the spread of the death and famine which has already claimed such a toll. New Zealand can help. Wellington residents are asked to enrol m the army of helpers, to keep sending all tney oan afford till the great end is accomplished, and the little ones are saved from the menace of horrible death. Dr. Nansen guarantees "just distribution of your gifts."
