Big business is being done at th» General Poat Office in the receipt ancl despatch of Christmas mails. It is officially reported that during the past two days double the amount of matter has been handled as compared with the corresponding period of last year. The overseas mail matter dealt with also has been exceptionally heavy. Since Friday i last no less than 1296 bags of mail for Wellington city alone have been distributed. Of these, 127 arri%'ed by th* Manuka, 112 by the Maheno, 566 by/tha Ruahine, and 491 by the Marama, Tba staff, in consequence, is being kept going day and nMit.
