HOPELESS CONTRACT
'n.s.w. ironworks closed.
(VNIfIS PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPTMOBT.) (Received December 21, 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. AD the employees of the Clyde Engineering Works, totalling 1500, have been dismissed, and the works are closing owing to the effect of the .'basic wage. The manager has explained that a contract was undertaken to construct 300 locomotives for £2,500,0C0. ( The first 30 .were completed at a cost considerably in excess of the estimated amount, and the contract could not be continued unless the Government came to the company's assistance.
