MANAWATU

(IT TBLIGMPH.—SPECIAL TO 111 POST.)

PALMEKSTON N., This Day. Good sport has been obtained by several local fishermen in the Manawatu River. On Tuesday afternoon an, angler, fishing three miles below Aahhurst, secured within a short time ono three and a-half pounder, ■ four throe pounders, and four weighing one and a-half pounds each. A sale of work was held to-day in aid of the fund for building a new Presbyterian Sunday School. Those in charge of the various departments were:—Plain work, Mesdames W. Coombs, J. C. Young, and C B. Williamson; fancy work, Miss Chapman, assisted by the Girls' Bible' Class; sweets, Misses Bett and M'Kay'; produce, Mesdames Edwards, Bird, and Spackman; tea rooms, Mn, Nairn; ice cream, Misses Fairy and Daisy Osborne, and Miss Myrtle Nairn; flowers, Misses Nairn and I. Chapman; meat booth, Messrs. Bolsillie and Chapman; Chriitmas tree, Girls' Bible Class; judges of baby show, Sister Maclean and Nurse Kilgour. At tho meeting of the Manawatu County Council, reference was made'to the fact that the increased railway freights were resulting in traffic being diverted from the railways to the roads. A motion was carried to the effect "That the matter of freights on the railways should receive immediate consideration."

"Motor traffic is going on to a considerable extent, militating against the revenue of the railways at the expense of the counties over which the traffic passes owing to the increase in the upkeep of the roads. In the interests of settlement this' surely must be wrong, for ratepayers are called upon for an increase in rates, and the freight is lost to the railways. Our council believes that a revision of rates should be made so that this traffic should be by rail." ,
