HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

DEFENCE ECONOMIES.

The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m. In reply to Mr. T. E. Y. Seddon, the Minister of Defence (Sir R. Heaton Rhodes) said that since 27th October, 1920, the membership of the New Zealand Staff Corps had been reduced from 206 to 150. In accordance with recommendations of the Economies Committee, further reduction* in Defence expenditure, entailing drastic changes, would be made. Notice was given to introduce the Public Holidays Amendment, Counties Amendment, and Municipal Corporations Amendment Bills. ~The Inspection of Machinery Amendment Bill was introduced by GovernorGeneral's Message. It makes provision for an increase of fees. The Aid to Public Works and Land Settlement Bill was also introduced. In reply to Mr. Wilford, the Prime Minister said it authorised the borrowing of £5,000,000 abroad, but it was not intended to raise the money for some time, though it would be required long before Parliament met again. The Main Highways Bill > was introduced. The Hon. J. G. Coates said it was the same Bill as was submitted to the Counties Conference, but the roads were not specified, and there was provision for a board, which would allocate the expenditure on different roads.
