THORNDON RECLAMATION

FEAR OF DELAY IN COMMENCING WORK. '

Fear that delay will be experienced in commencing work on the Thorndon reclamation. was expressed at last night* meeting of the City Council by Councillor C. H. Chapman., The matter'cropped up as the result of the following recommendation from the Finance Committee: ■—"That the council urge upon the Government the necessity of immediately proceeding with the Thorndon reclamation and retaining wall." Councillor Chapman said he thought there was a danger of delay owing to the fact that it was not known whether the Bailway Department was ready to commence work. Owing to the financial position of the Railway Department he had not the slightest doubt that the work on the reclamation was going; to be held ur> for some time. The importance of the matter to Wellington and the Dominion should be stressed, and, quite apart altogether iron) the position of the Bailway Department, financial arrangements should be made to enable the work to be commenced immediately. Unless they were particularly keen they would find that the Railway Department would hold up the matter, and the commencement of the work would be postponed for an indefinite period. , Councillor H. D. Bennett said he could assure the City Council that so far as the Harbour Board was concerned there would be no delay. The board had fought hard to bring all difficulties with the Railway Department to an end, and h^d anxiously awaited the time when the Department could be brought to an agreement. The mind of the Railway Department was not known, but when the department came to terms with the board it should be understood that the latter body was- prepared.to start work at once. Instructions had been Riven for the work to be commenced without delay. The recommendatiop was adopted.
