M'Grath, chairman of the committee, sent the following letter to Mother Aubert at. the Home, of Compassion, Island Bay:— "Enclosed please find cheque for £2000, being the proceeds of the recent appeal made for assistance to your work of charity in this city? I also send a statement showing the receipts and expenditure duly audited. "The heartfelt thanks of the promoters of the appeal is hereby tendered to all who assisted in raising the amount. Where so many cheerfully helped, especially the ladies who arranged "at homes" and other functions, the stallholders, their assistants, and the generous public of Wellington1, it would be impossible to thank all individually. I desire, however, to record our deep gratitude to the daily press of the city for the generous extent to which their news columns were opened to help your noble cause; this help was invaluable i,n the success achieved. The secretary, Mrs. Gleeson, and her assistant and act-ing-treasurer, Miss Lucy Wynne, from the inauguration of the appeal daily worked many long hours with most commendable zeal and ability. ' They are solely responsible for the clerical and financial work of the appeal. '/ ■
"While the result is a sufficient reward to all concerned, I Venture to suggest that all helpers, and especially these two ladies, will be remembered in the prayers and works of your good Sisters and the occupants of your home. ..." The letter is accompanied by an auditor's certificate, relating >to the books kept by Mr. M'Grath. It shows that the gross receipts to 7th December amounted to £2114 Bs. Out of ; this amount there had been paid for expenses, properly vouched for, the sum of £108 17s. £2000 had been paid paid to Mother Aubert, and there was a balance at the bank amounting to £5 111.
