Toronto reports that early returns of the Canadian elections indicate that the Liberals are making heavy gains in the eastern provinces. Several Ministers of the present Government have been dej feated. The Farmers' Party appears weak ajid the Liberals strong in Ontario, wher« the Farmers are not expected to make gains. Mr. Mackenzie King, Liberal leader, was elected. i The returns from 55 of the-235 total, sea|s show 44 Liberals, nine Conservatives, two Fanners' Party. A count two hours after the polls shut showted 83 Liberals, 33 Conservatives, 17 Progressives, and two. Labour candidates returned, indicating a large majority for the liberals. Mr. Meighen (Premier) appeared to be losing in his own riding. A later return gave "the position as Liberals 120 Conservatives 43 Farmers 37 • Labour 2 The chief issue ofjhe election is the tariff, the Liberals advocating a tariff for revenue only, and the Conservatives a high tariff, preaching against' the economic domination of the United States.
