PERSONAL. Mr. L. E. Ternes has signed on the Tahiti as radio operator. Mr. J. Jeromse'n, third engineer of the Tofua, is at present in Wellington for tbo purpose of being married. Mr. C. McLeod, chief officer of the Mapourika, has come ashore at Wellington . According to a cable message received by Murray, Roberts, and Co., the Canadian Government steamer Canadian Mariner left Sydney on Saturday for Auckland to load for New York and Boston. She is dne at Auckland on Sunday, and will later complete her loading at Napier. Tie Federal Line advises that the Tresithney (an ex-German steamer) will leave Sydney on the 22nd December for Napier and other New Zealand ports to load for New York. The' Shaw, Savill. and Albion liner Mnimoa, at present discharging Welsh coal at Tihiaru, is to toad fit Tokomaru Bay, Napier, and WeiHngtou, sailing from this port for London, ,via Cape Horn, on the 10th January. According to a special message from Greymouth to the Cbristchurch Sun, communication from the underwriters in England in connection with the wrecked steamer Perth is expected this weefc. ' No word has previously .been received, and it is understood that a cablegram has gone astray. The vessel still lies across the tip head, but the list and the weather conditions preclude any possibility of boarding her. The wireless apparatus, worth ±'200, was salved in a damaged condition a week ago. Captain McDouald is still at Greymouth. A new service of large fast vessels being inaugurated by the Commonwealth Government Line will -shorten the voyage to Australia by nt least three or four days (says nn exchange). With aniple cargo and passenger space, they are expected to do the voyage from London to Fremantle in 30 days, a feat that is accomplished by cutting out the Mediterranean ports. This fleet consists of five new steamers, specially built, each of about 14.003 tons register. Only a small number of saloon pas. sengers will be carried, the bulk of the space, being devoted to the third-class, in which' over 700 persons can be accommodated. Each bears the name of an Australian coastal bay.
